Melissa is a Consultant with the Kentucky Department of Education (KDE) and her work ranges from digital learning to differentiated instruction, universal design for learning, intervention systems, CIITS Instructional Resource Team Lead and Integrated Methods for Learning Strategy Team Lead. She began her teaching career in 1996 when she graduated from Eastern Kentucky University and went on to serve as a special education teacher in Franklin and Meade counties. She taught students from preschool to high school during her nine years as a special educator. While working as an Exceptional Children Consultant at the KDE, Melissa became a certified online facilitator with the eLearning Kentucky grant and facilitated online professional development courses and communities as well as spending almost two years co-managing the grant. She also taught face-to-face and fully-online courses at the undergraduate level for Midway College.

During her early years in the classroom, she developed a love for technology as she observed how it could be used to motivate and engage her students. This love for students and technology led Melissa to coursework in an Instructional Technology master’s degree from Georgetown College. Her devotion to the improvement of learning for all kids through the use of technology only intensified as she became aware of online learning and all of the possibilities it creates.

Melissa’s professional goal is to promote the transformation of teaching and learning by serving and supporting educators so they can design personalized and differentiated learning situations in face-to-face and online classrooms as well as in settings outside of the school building, schedule, and pace of traditional education.
